Why Are Some People Successful While Others Are Not?

I have recently stumbled on a very interesting video in which Tony Robbins is interviewed by internet marketing gurus Frank Kern and John Reese.  The question they asked was: “Why is it that so many people who buy our educational internet marketing products do not succeed?” After listening to their conversation, I realized it contained a lot of value. Therefore, I decided to write this post in which I will summarize the answer Tony Robbins gave them (I will also provide the link at the end of the post to the actual video that you can watch).

It turns out that whether you succeed at anything or not has to do with how you condition your mind. People who are successful with their business (or anything else for that matter) where able to condition themselves in these three ways:

  1. They were able to find their “why?” Why do you want to succeed? According to Tony Robbins, you will not succeed at anything unless you have a strong enough “why” that will get you through the fear of failure. For John Reese, for example, that “why” was a Porsche of his dreams and $100,000 in debt that he had to pay off. For Tony Robbins himself, it was to provide for his family and help other families that were starving. Everyone has to find their own “why” that will keep them going.
  2. Condition your mind by taking action and establishing daily “rituals”. Tony Robbins believes that the way you achieve the highest results is by getting yourself in the right state of mind. You can do that by creating specific “rituals” that have to be performed on a daily basis. For example, if you buy an education product that teaches you how to make money on the Internet, you then have to condition your mind in order to apply that information and do it consistently. To do that, you would make a ritual of doing a little bit of what the product teaches you on a daily basis, and after doing it for some time you would get in the state where you’d just keep doing it until you are successful.
  3. Do it one step at a time. After you have found your “why” and conditioned your mind through taking action and establishing rituals, all you need to do is follow through the process one step at a time. It is crucial, however, to have a strong enough “why” and establish daily rituals; otherwise, you won’t be able to succeed.

Of course, if everything was so simple, then everyone would be successful. There’s one thing that stops most people from succeeding in life. This thing is uncertainty. The majority of people do not follow through because they are uncertain of their ability to succeed. In other words, they are afraid of failure. According to Tony Robbins, the steps described above, such as finding your “why” and conditioning your mind through taking action and establishing rituals will help you overcome that fear. Only after acquiring absolute certainty one can succeed at whatever they do because it’s the only way they will take enough action to achieve their goals.

The feeling of uncertainty to a large degree  stems from our beliefs. That is, many of us have limited beliefs that make us feel uncertain in our ability to succeed, such as “I’m not as good as someone else” or “It won’t work no matter how hard I try”. These limited beliefs destroy our certainty, which in turn keeps us from tapping our full potential, which in turn makes us take less action, which in turn makes us produce less results, which in turn reinforces our limited belief, which makes us take even less action, and this process follows in a downward spiral until a person who get’s caught in this cycle fails completely. The only way to get out of this cycle is to change your beliefs and become certain that you will succeed. That’s why it’s important to find your “why” and learn how to condition your mind through taking action, establishing rituals, visualization techniques, etc. Once you are absolutely certain that you’ll succeed no matter what, you will tap your full potential by taking massive action, which in turn will get you massive results, which in turn will reinforce your positive belief, which in turn will make you take even more action, which in turn will bring you even more results, and the cycle continues indefinitely. This is how the general diagram looks like:

The most important part is to get yourself in a state of certainty. Certainty is what makes you succeed. Most people are uncertain in their ability to succeed. They might want to, but they are afraid. The best way to get over fear is to find a big enough reason to make you have to succeed or condition yourself so that you see and feel it so often that you get a level of certainty at which you just do it. It’s all it really takes.

According to Tony Robbins, so many people are uncertain because “it takes guts to believe, and if you think someone else is gonna do it for you without YOU putting your guts on the line, you might as well just forget about it right now”. He continues by saying that 99% of the money is being made by 1% of the people because only 1% of the people will condition their mind and condition their body and follow through some daily rituals. The rest will tell a story of why it didn’t work and how it wasn’t their fault. You have only two things in life: you’ve got results or you’ve got a story. Finally, he states that your life doesn’t change in 10 or 20 years; it changes in a moment. The moment when you decide. The moment when you say “enough”, “no more”, “I quit” and make a firm, infallible decision to do something and stick with it. That’s when your life truly changes. So you don’t have to wait until you’ve mastered everything. You simply have to get started and do what’s next…and just put yourself in a state when you start making some progress. That’s all to it.
